When you make an online payment, avoid using debit cards. Or anything tied directly to your bank account in fact. With most debit cards you are not protected against fraud and disputes with those cards can be difficult to resolve. Plus, if someone steals your debit card number, your entire bank account is vulnerable.
Instead, use options that give an extra layer of protection between hackers and your bank accounts like a credit card with insurance which has a limit on liability if your stolen card has been used.
Additionally, credit card users are protected by the Truth in Lending Act, which says you’re not liable for any debts if you report that your card has been lost or stolen before unauthorized transactions are made.
If you’re still wary of using credit cards for online transactions, try a service like PayPal. The funds will still come directly out of your bank account or whatever other payment method you choose, but you’ll have an extra layer of protection against fraud.
